WCI Lifestyle Tips - Dive for Health

With the opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics less than a month away, our minds turn to all the great activities we can do this summer to stay in shape and be healthy. Whether you're focused on weight loss or healthier living, adding swimming to your fitness routine can be rewarding and help break the monotony of heading to the gym. At WCI Communities, we are happy to be able to offer this great wellness perk at each community, whether it's the pool at the Club or right out your own back door.

This low-impact activity is the perfect exercise choice for any skill level and great for anyone with aching joints. Swimming can help strengthen, tone, and condition your body without jarring, harsh effects. Plus, there are several fitness variations to swimming you can mix into your schedule to avoid boredom. Here are a few to try:

• Swimming Laps - There are a number of different strokes you can use as a great cardiovascular activity. The "crawl" is the most popular which has you on your belly using flutter kicks and windmill arm motions to stay afloat. The backstroke is similar. However, you're on your back. For the more advanced swimmers, there are the breaststroke and butterfly.

• Water Jogging - The resistance of the water gives you a great all-over workout. You can alternate between jogging and walking around the pool for several laps. You can also incorporate side wall push-ups and triceps dips on the stairs to work your upper body as well.

• Water Aerobics - This is a great activity to do with friends in a class setting. Usually set to music with an instructor, water aerobics incorporates low-impact moves perfect for all skill levels.
